You may not think your hair needs a DIY protein treatment, but think again.

Natural hair contains protein molecules, keratin, and amino acids to be precise.

However, we do deplete these nutrients from our hair while struggling to maintain the strands.

Let us focus on how to determine when your hair needs protein supplements, and most importantly, how you can administer the treatments.

WHEN DO YOU NEED A DIY PROTEIN TREATMENT?

If your hair is too porous, a protein treatment will help to strengthen the strands to make them less porous.

If your hair is less elastic, enhancing your hairs’ protein level will help improve its elasticity, making it look full and bouncy.

Your hair feels sticky/gummy — this means that your strands are over moisturized; therefore, an excellent DIY protein treatment will help ease the problem and strengthen your hair.

When your are experiencing excess hair breakage — insufficient protein, moisture, or elasticity issues can cause shedding. A strong powerful protein treatment can, therefore, mitigate this problem.

WHAT ARE THE BEST HOMEMADE DIY PROTEIN TREATMENTS?

a) Avocado-Coconut Oil

Avocado contains vitamins A, B, and E, which are suitable for hair health. Its high-fat content enables it to strengthen hair strands and make them less dry. It also boosts collagen production hence improving hair growth.

Coconut oil, on the other hand, helps to repair hair tissues due to its penetrative property. Besides, it has a rich composition of fatty acids that are good at preventing protein loss from your hair.

Application Procedure: Mash one ripe avocado and then mix it with one tablespoon of cold-pressed coconut oil until you obtain a very smooth consistency. Spread the mixture over your hair and leave it on for 45 minutes under a plastic cap before shampooing and conditioning your hair.

b) Egg Yolk- Honey

Other than adding proteins to your hair, this combination of honey with egg yolk also provides moisturizing properties. The egg yolk contains proteins while honey helps to seal moisture in your strands; hence, improving its capability for holding moisture. You can supplement the mixture with almond oil, which has some essential fatty acids.

Application Procedure: Measure one tablespoon of honey and mix it with one egg yolk and one tablespoon of almond oil to obtain a smooth consistency. Massage the concoction to your natural hair and allow it to stay for a maximum of 20 minutes to avoid honey from bleaching your strands.

After that, rinse your hair with some cold water. Wash your hair with a shampoo and finish by conditioning it with hair conditioner.

C) Yogurt Cream-Egg Mask

Since yogurt is rich in probiotics, combining it with an egg, which is rich in proteins, will boost the health status of your hair strands, not forgetting their softness, shininess, and silkiness. Yogurt also has lactic acid that helps to clean buildup off the scalp and hair shaft; thus, moisturizing and nourishing it.

Application Procedure: Take two tablespoons of yogurt cream and mix it with one egg to achieve a smooth paste. Use the yolk only for dry hair, egg white for oily hair, and the whole egg if you have standard strands.

Massage the mixture to the scalp and leave it on for up to 30 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water. Finish by shampooing and conditioning your hair.
